Since our inception in 2008, B.R.A.K.E.S. has trained more than 110,000 teens and their parents, saving lives and making U.S. roadways safer. Expansion for B.R.A.K.E.S. teen defensive driving school program

Founded by multi-time Top Fuel drag racing champion Doug Herbert after the tragic loss of his two sons in a car crash in 2008, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit is supported by official vehicle partner Kia Motors America, Nationwide Teen Driving Classes, driving training school and several other corporate sponsors, major donors and grant providers. Herbert developed the free lifesaving defensive driver training program to deal with the number-one cause of death among teens – car crashes – helping to improve Teen safety and prevent Teen accidents, other parents from facing the heartbreak of losing a child.

Free National Teen Defensive Driving School Heads to Phoenix Area on April 13-14

The national free teen defensive driving program B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) will return to the Phoenix area, visiting Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14.

Utilizing vehicles provided by Kia Motors, the B.R.A.K.E.S. program offers teens extensive behind-the-wheel instruction from professional trainers including current and former law enforcement officers as well as professional racing drivers, teaching the teens and their parents how to be safer on the road. Exercises include Distracted Driving Awareness, Panic Braking, Crash Avoidance, Drop-wheel/Off-road Recovery and Car Control/Skid Recovery.

NCSHP and B.R.A.K.E.S.: Teaming to make North Carolina Roadways Safer

As the North Carolina State Highway Patrol approaches its 90th anniversary, everyone in the area has cause to celebrate and thank the Troopers for the all the amazing work they do to keep us safe. Personally, I have even more reason than the average North Carolinian to be grateful. The men and women of the NCSHP helped me through the most difficult day of my life and, since then, have continued to support me in the pursuit of a lifesaving mission to make our nation’s roads safer for all.

The NCSHP was one of the first on the scene that tragic day in January 2008 when a car crash took the lives of my two sons, Jon and James. NCSHP was there to report, advise and console us in the worst scenario that any parent can ever possibly imagine. In the 11 years since, its support of my family and the B.R.A.K.E.S. teen defensive driving program that I established in honor of my boys has been invaluable.

Program has surpassed 35,000 young drivers trained.

Concord, N.C. (February 27, 2019) – In response to growing demand, the B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) national teen defensive driving program founded by multi-time Top Fuel drag racing champion Doug Herbert in honor of his sons is planning 40 weekend schools during 2019. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit is supported by official vehicle partner Kia Motors America and several other corporate sponsors, major donors and grant providers.

Today’s announcement comes on the heels of record participation in 2018, with approximately 5,900 teens and more than 6,300 parents taking part in the life-saving program last year. Since its inception in 2008, B.R.A.K.E.S. has taught more than 35,000 young drivers, plus their parents, critical skills to make the country’s roadways safer.

In an attempt to impact as many families as possible, B.R.A.K.E.S. will return to key markets with multiple visits to zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina; Carowinds Park in Charlotte; the Manheim Auto Auction near Orlando, Florida; and Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. In addition, new stops planned for 2019 already include Ypsilanti, Michigan; Wichita, Kansas; and San Marcos, California.

Following its successful visit to Detroit’s Belle Isle in 2018, B.R.A.K.E.S. is intending multiple visits to the “Motor City,” thanks in part to a new affiliation with the annual Swing for Safety charity golf tournament at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In addition, with returning support from Kia’s Central Region and dealer groups around the Midwest, the program will be back in Kansas City, St. Louis, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Chicago.

Other stops on B.R.A.K.E.S.’ 2019 tour include Atlanta, Memphis and Phoenix, with Topeka and Charleston, South Carolina currently listed as tentative.

2019 starts now! -Putonthebrakes

As New Year’s Eve approaches, our 2019 calendar is really filling up. In fact, 26 weekends are already confirmed, and registration for five schools in January and February is open – with one already full!

The 2019 schedule gets underway with our first-ever visit to California State University San Marcos, located north of San Diego and just east of the coastal towns of Carlsbad and Oceanside. We’ll be returning to many of the mainstay locations that have served as the foundation of our schedule for the last several years, including our “home track” at zMax Dragway in Concord, NC; Carowinds Amusement park in Charlotte; the North Carolina Trooper Training Center in Raleigh; and our West Coast “home away from home,” the L.A. County Fairplex in Pomona.
