Amidst Rising Teen Fatality Rates, The B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Defensive Driving Program And The NCSHP Work To Make State Roadways Safer

With Fewer Cars On North Carolina Roads Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic, The State Has Experienced a 12 Percent Year-to-Date Increase in Teen On-Road Deaths

CONCORD, N.C. (December 1, 2020) – The B.R.A.K.E.S. national pro-active teen defensive driving program today announced it is strengthening its partnership with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) on a newly formed initiative aimed at curbing a 12 percent year-to-date increase in teen roadway related deaths, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  Through November 20, a total of 142 fatalities were recorded, significantly outpacing 127 through November 20 of 2019.

The partnership comes amidst escalating incidents of dangerous driving habits, which leaders from both organizations attribute to increased—often dangerous—speeding, with fewer vehicles on state highways and surface streets due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With a decrease in roadway users correlated to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen an incomprehensible increase in fatalities involving teen drivers and passengers,” said Colonel Glenn M. McNeill, Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol.  “It’s imperative that we emphasize the importance for teen drivers to stay focused and drive safely.  We must continue to extend this message through partnerships such as with Doug Herbert and his B.R.A.K.E.S. team—I have firsthand witnessed the exceptional training they provide to young drivers in North Carolina.”

Looking Doug Herbert, Founder of the B.R.A.K.E.S. teen safe driving program

Hi, I’m Doug Herbert, Founder of the B.R.A.K.E.S. teen safe driving program. These safe driving tips are going to help make you a more responsible driver on the road.

Now, we’re going to talk about mirror setting. On mirror adjustment, this is critical.  You want to make sure that you can see your rear door handle when you have your head pretty much over against the side.  When your head is in the normal driving position, you can’t see the side of your car in the mirror.  You want to kick that mirror out where you can eliminate the blind spot in the lane next to you.

When adjusting that right-side mirror, you want to lean over the center console and barely be able to see over that right-hand door handle.  When you’re sitting in the normal position, you can’t see that side of the car.  So you want to kick those mirrors out and eliminate the blind spots.

Hi, I’m Doug Herbert, Founder of the B.R.A.K.E.S. teen safe driving program. These safe driving tips are going to help make you a more responsible driver on the road.

We’re going to talk about seating. First if all, make sure you’re the right distance from the steering wheel.  Basically, you want to be able to drape your wrist over the top of the wheel, make sure you have your head rest adjusted properly so you have got a little bit of distance.

Almost all new cars have height adjustments on the seat.  It’s very important to look out of the windshield from either the center of the windshield or above.  If you’re sitting too low, that’s restricting your visibility.  Your seat height should place your eyes right about in the middle of the windshield.

So it’s really important to have your left foot on the dead pedal. That dead pedal over your left wheel well, you’re going to push your left leg down on there. That holds you in a good seat position and makes you safer in the car.
